TORQUE WRENCH ADAPTERS
Some tasks require the use of a torque wrench adapter when the nut or screw cannot be reached with a regular
socket on the end of the torque wrench. These adapters add to the overall length of the torque wrench and
make the dial or scale reading less than actual torque applied to the nut or screw. To prevent over torquing
and damage to equipment, calculate correct dial or scale reading using the conversion formula on the
following page.
CONVERSION FORMULA
Correct dial or scale readings are determined by the use of the following formula:
Correct Reading
=
Required torque value
Length of torque wrench + length of adapter
length of torque wrench
NOTE
Length of torque wrench is measured from center of handle to
center of drive. The length of adapter is measured from center of
drive to center of wrench.
Length of
torque wrench
22 in. (55.9 cm)
Length of
adapter
3 in. (7.6 cm)
Figure 4. Measurement of Torque Wrench.
NOTE
In this example, torque wrench measures 22 in. (55.9 cm) an adapter
is 3 in. (7.6 cm). Required torque is 19 lb-ft (25.8 Nm).
Correct Reading
=
19 lb-ft (25.8 Nm)
22 in. (55.9 cm) + 3 in. (7.6 cm) 22 in.
(55.9 cm)
Correct Reading
=
19 lb-ft (25.8 Nm)
25 in. (63.5 cm) 22 in. (55.9 cm)
Correct Reading
=
19 lb-ft (25.8 Nm)

Correct Reading
=
17 lb-ft (23.0 Nm)
